Nice idea - it looks great so far. One thing you could do is to sharpen the sticks or, better still, use cocktail sticks or wooden skewers cut to size as the "earthen fort" type things/defensive structures. Might make it look a bit more refined and really make it pop once it's all painted.

Also, are you going to attach it to a wooden base board? It'll make the whole thing a lot more sturdy.
