Hello all,

I'm new to this site though not new to the hobby. I've been idle for quite a large amount of time, but I've gone through some phases where I was actively collecting, painting (though generally not so good) and even playing. I've collected quite a bit of miniatures over the years and at this point could consider myself quite satisfied with my collection. I've checked GW's new releases for The Hobbit and while I was pleased with a lot of it, the high pricing put me off. So I postponed any purchases (as well as for the LotR range which seemed to have increased in price too) to a later date where I would either find them cheaper or I would have more disposable income. I now realize that the latter isn't going to happen any time soon as I spend nearly 60 hours a week studying, which doesn't leave a lot of room for work, or the hobby for that matter. Meanwhile college is quite expensive and I have now depleted all my funds.

This wouldn't really be a problem if not for the fact that a lot of miniatures seem to be going out of production. I've seen the prices for some models on eBay and it made me shudder. So I now spend all my resources tracking down and buying up any model that has gone out of production that I have a great interest in.

The problem is, my interest keeps growing while my resources are dwindling. Do any of you have any advice for me as to any course of action?

At this moment I am greatly interested in the following models that are still available on GW:
Durin & Mardin
Glorfindel Armoured
Elladan & Elrohir Foot & Mounted
Wildmen of Druadan Box Set
Imrahil Mounted
Erkenbrand Foot & Mounted
Gamling with Royal Banner Foot & Mounted
Gundabad Orc General (previously Bolg)
Great Beast of Gorgoroth
Uruk-Hai with Crossbows x4

Like I said I depleted all my funds so it'd probably be best not to buy anything for a while. At the same time it would be a huge shame if in the meantime they went out of production. I was wondering if any of you have any guess about the short term availability of these products, or the availability (and pricing) on second hand markets such as eBay?
I do have plenty of Uruk's, but I'm completely new to conversions. Is it easy to find or make crossbows and convert some of them?

Thanks a lot in advance, I apologize for the length of this post.

buy now or regret later :)

GW are winding everything down, as it goes out of stock, it goes OOP. If it is OOP, you're generally looking at double the RRP of the model.

My advise would be to sit it out and wait. Once the excitement from the last movie has gone, GW support will completely dissapear. I am afraid many people will quit the hobby at that point, second hand product will be available on Ebay and other sites.

Some countries have a good player base and tournament circuit, the game will survive as long as they manage to introduce enough new players. So the game won't dissapear, but there will be much more items offered for sale compared to people looking to buy.

If, at that point, you are still looking to buy, prices will go down.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll buy some of the ones I want most and are relatively harder to find on the second hand market.

By the way I noticed the following have been sold out:
The Lord of the Rings Casualties
Saruman and Grima
Ambush at Amon Hen (10 figures)
Minas Tirith Citadel Guard (one of the two sets of spears)
Groblog, King of the Deeps
The Fallen Realms Sourcebook (?!)

Temporarily Out of Stock are:
Gondor Battlecry Trebuchet
Osgiliath Veterans

Incredible that recent releases are "no longer available".
Managed to get the last osgiliath ruins in my local GW today, these are now longer available

I managed to get mine a couple of weeks before Christmas, and it was then that the manager told me they were being discontinued. Like you, it was the last one the store.

I can't understand why they would discontinue such high-quality and popular products...

I don't get how new players are going to play the game without source books?

If it looks like coffee, tastes like coffee and smells like coffee, it probably is coffee.

In short it looks and smells like the next stage of winding down the system.

Either to a simplified, one rule book, catch all, that will see out selling the last of the high yield products until the license expires, or a total fade out to a minimal and shrinking range that will be all but gone by the time the license expires.

But if they are not bothering to re-cast a highly popular plastic set like the Osgiliath ruins I suspect the latter. Running off a few more sprues from the existing moulds is like printing money, so either the moulds are worn and they are not bothering to invest in repair, or they really have lost interest to such a degree they will just let the range dwindle. Likewise, hoping up a PDF version of the source book, for a £5 or £10 on the site has virtually no cost, but they haven't even done that, so unless the Source book gets restocked it is quite significant I think. Sorry if this is off topic too much.

Of course it is entirely possible that they are clearing the way for a new terrain box (Laketown anyone?) I also think there must be a final rulebook coming. They cant sell minis that have no rules. Thats plain crazy.

Our local stores have a bare minimum of stock for LOTR/Hobbit. Nobody plays it here unfortunately.

GW Canada has discontinued the Free Peoples sourcebook. So I ordered one from a game shop in Calgary. I even asked to see if they could get the Amon Hen boxed set and they said they could. So, even if GW doesn't have products, sometimes stores have alternate suppliers/distributors that can potentially get what you need.

But discontinuing a sourcebook, especially when they continue to release new models, does indeed seem to me foreboding.
