anyone else see this? I do not have a "warhammer" store near me to check I this. I was under the impression that GW had the license until 2017. Perhaps they pulled out early?

They are just removing them from the shelves, you can still buy them online and I've been told you can ask about them instore and they'll bring it out the back for you.

it is the beginning of the end, but its not the end by any means

On my visit to the GW store on Mallorca, Spain, the manager told me that they arent refilling the few units they may sell. So clealy is the end at least in the physical stores. The shelves were almost empty with several units of the same box (minas tirith warriors).

Yes, it's true. My FLGS, the largest one in N. America, is liquidating their remaining Hobbit and LotR stock. Odd, since they usually pride themselves on having everything for every game.

Has anyone heard any reliable info on when GW's licence for LOTR and The Hobbit expires? I"ve heard rumors running from end of this year to as much as seven years from now. I'm trying to budget my hobby purchases through the end of this year, and I'm wondering if I need to load up on LOTR/Hobbit minis while I still can?

I know lots of stuff can be found on fleabay, but quite a bit of the Hobbit stuff in particular never really made it to retailers (or players) in any great quantities. I need to order that sort of stuff from GW before it goes permenantly OOP.

My local GW hasn't ''properly'' stocked the Hobbit range since the finecast blister releases for Desolation of Smaug. At about the time of the Laketown releases, the store simply stocked the weekly releases until they ran out and then didn't restock, only at the request of customer orders.

Personally i haven't been into a GW shop for over a year, prefer Vallejo paints, Rosemary & Co brushes and anything miniatures related i buy online from independent sellers. I really, really hope the licence is dropped by GW and someone else takes it up.

The length of the current license isn't in the public domain - it was announced in 2011 but no duration was given. I haven't searched GW financial reports for clues/statements but I assume if there were any to be had they would have been quoted ad nauseum by now. It could be 2017 and be another 6 years; it as easily might not be. I'd be as interested as anyone else in concrete evidence!

This is all I can find about it.

To be honest, I hope they keep going with it. I can't imagine any other company really has the power to 'push' it in the same way.

Only other way, would be for a new company to take it on, as they would actively NEED to grow it in the way GW did. Part of me wonders if GW has realised the license is almost up (in the grand scheme of things, this could be months or even 3 years+) and they have had more success with their own IP (Warhammer, 40K and everything in-between), so why invest in a product they don't even own?

It's sad, but potentially true. I am gutted that there has been so little support for The Hobbit, even when the films were in cinema. Then the complete lack now, but hey, it is what it is.

This - http://investor.games-workshop.com/2011/02/09/243/. Suggests it will run to Feb 2016. I cant find anything about extending it any further.
