The base is a diorama for display. His actual gaming base drops into it. I could see the seam in the pictures. So you just pick him up and he comes out ready to play. I’m surprised they didn’t do Dain the same way.

I am tempted to turn the diorama into a piece of terrain.

Either way I’ll be getting him. I always thought the elk was ridiculous (and goat riders too), but that model is so amazing I have to have it.

Maybe the idea of the elk and the goat riders are kind of silly, but remember: The tone of The Hobbit is more whimsical than LOTR, so I think they fit in pretty well. Love all the Iron Hills stuff.

I can see that Thranduil's base fits into the diorama, I'm just wondering how much extra the model is going to cost because of it? Seems unnecessary. I do like the base that Dain comes on though. It looks good and doesn't increase the size.

I was actually hoping for a more stately pose for the elk. But it is a battle game, so... It's just that the way it's charging like that, the antlers look like a pair of hands on its head, don't you think?

The elk fits perfectly and the goats work pretty well too, in my opinion. The only one I don't like is Dain's pig. I wish they had gone with the wild boar like they originally wanted. That would have looked awesome. In a world with giant spider, mumak, warg riders and great and fell beasts, goat riders is fairly tame.

The dwarves are cool and I think the new captain is absolutely stunning (even if his wargear's rather less than optimal). However, I'm absolutely blown away by the trolls and Thranduil.

They had the painted models in the cabinets at the GT and the pictures truly do not do them justice - Thranduil is absolutely stunning and the likeness to Lee Pace is incredible - totally up there with one of their best. I can't wait to get him on the table. I can understand the complaints about 'having' to pay for the display base but no-one knows prices yet so we might be pleasantly surprised, the fact that there's no foot model in the kit should make it a bit cheaper.

The hands down winners for me though are the trolls, again, the pictures don't do them justice and it's hard to convey quite how huge they are. The detail in the scythe gauntlets' one's face is spectacular, can't wait to spend far too much time working that up! Having just spent a couple of weeks painting Keith's gorgeous Ogre faces, I can't wait to see what he's done on an even bigger canvas.

I love those lovely humongous Gundabad Trolls, especially Mr No Jambags. Anyone have an idea on price £40-£55?

There was no price given but based on the price of the Ogres and Ballista and the size of these guys I'm guessing they'll be around £60. I can't see them being more than that and that way, if they're cheaper I'll just be pleasantly surprised.

They can't come soon enough for me - absolutely stunning!

Hi guys!
Quick update. I just got my Forge World order in today. I ordered at least one of all of the new releases.

I guess I got used to the constant stream of disappointments with GW Failcarp casting (bent weapons, muddied details, brittle/chalky material) that I wasn't expecting much.

Forge World needs to redo all of the Hobbit line, because... golly! The Forge World sculpts are AWESOME.
I can't even begin to tell you how awesome they are. Photos don't do them justice. They really don't. The detail is STUNNING. Even the scenic bases are optional (for those wondering).

The figures might be expensive, but by jingo! they are worth it.

I can't wait for the next batch of models to come out.
Forge World has made a believer out of me.

Cheers!

totally agree with you mate ; my only request of FW would be a slight reduction in price or discount on buying in 'bulk'?

There's no doubt at all on the quality of the models, just a little too expensive to buy regularly.

I completely agree - I'm halfway through some Iron Hills dwarves, Dain and the Ballista and I've completed the new Alfrid and both Ogres and I've been blown away by the quality of all of them. The detail and character of the Ogres was simply incredible, never seen anything like it in an SBG model - they may be expensive but I honestly think they're well worth it!

Great painting Dr.Grant, especially when you think how close that photo is!
Exciting times at the moment IMO with all the new releases FW/GW are putting out

A couple of questions regarding the new releases:
1) How do the ogres compare in size to the cave trolls?
2) Where are the rules for mattocks?

Author:  chranos [ Fri Mar 03, 2017 11:41 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: New Forgeworld Hobbit Releases

They are as big as a mordor troll but slimmer, so much taller than a cave troll

Mattocks are a two handed weapon with the option to special strike bash and piercing strike. This is defined in TABA

However, it seems that FW and GW might soon be combined, in order to fix the mess that is FW's shipping, and to streamline and simplify the ordering process and range composition.

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this? I would actually like it, because (since I'm in the US) right now if I place a $300 order with GW, I get free shipping. If I place a $300 order with FW, it costs me $345.

On the other hand, GW's online shop is divided up into countries, and right now if an item is out of stock in the US, I can't order from the UK store like I used to.

I hope so. That would really make it easier on me. The shipping is horrible to the USA :(

That's been rumoured so long that I doubt its ever going to happen. I think I first heard that being talked up around 2009ish!

New developments in this though.

- GW and FW customer service teams were merged a month ago.

- specialist games under the FW umbrella has put out listings for job oportunities as plastic model designers. No plastic models has yet been released by FW although a host of plastic models designed by the FW departements has been released.

- White Dwarf has blurred the lines between FW and GW products more and more after the new style magazines came out.

and unless my sources are lying to me I do expect the merging of the online stores to happen either just before or after the fiscal year ie. jun 1st

I would actually prefer Thranduil to come with a foot model instead of the diorama because I don't have a Thranduil foot model. That comes with the horse model, but I have been holding off on that to wait for the elk instead! Now it appears if I want the foot model, I'll have to get the horse anyway.

Post subject:  Re: New Forgeworld Hobbit Releases

maybe the foot model will be re-released separately alongside the elk? I agree it would be a crappy way of forcing people to buy the horse model as well as the elk as a way of getting thranduil on foot.

Yeah thats kind of a bummer, you can always grab the DOS model. Not quite the same gear but its a really nice model.

I had to think a bit before I realized "DOS" meant "Desolation of Smaug" lol. Anyway, I actually like the "King Thranduil" DOS foot model quite a bit, and would be quite satisfied with it, but it has been out of stock here in the US since I've gotten back into the hobby (which is admittedly just a few months). If they ever get it back in, I will happily pick it up.

I don't really like the one that comes with the horse model, the one with the two blades, one in each hand.
