As I said in the chatbox... Holy Moly that's Awesome!

Honestly, that is one amazing conversion, much much better than the original product!

Full Marks!

You know, when I first looked at that, I thought you'd just sawn two AotD models in half and stuck them together.

Truly, that's the mark of a great conversion.

Well done Mate!

"of its kind" get out clause! I've seen your dragon - you are no beginner sculptor, this mini shows it!

10/10 for a superb article, extremely well detailed and very clearly illustrated, and the painting is excellent. I like the idea of using AotD figures to learn sculpting princlples as you can make allowances for a certain amount of 'tattiness'. Well done Natarn Ulka!

Very Impressive. When I saw the thumbnail image I didn't even realize it was the King model at all until I actually came into the article.

Nice one.

I think you did a great job on this Nathan, my only criticism is the choice of weapon...its just a personal thing, but that thing just never looked right to me, even on the original miniature.
The sculpting as usual is excellent and you have created a unique miniature. Many people have used this colour scheme, however your Dessert Yellow & Bleached Bone wash is a great touch !

Dessert Yellow? Surely that is a food flavouring?

No, Dorth it is a food colouring.

Thanks for all your comments.

Thanks! It's true I've done some sculpting and conversions before.

My projects to date are:

Mumak head sculpture (conversion)
Haradrim raider conversion
Ent (Fangorn's fury)
2 Hobbit holes
Dragon (wip)
King of the Dead conversion.

So I accept your challenge on what might be false modesty on my part and my 'get out clause'. However, in terms of converting a small figure, I've never done so much work!

The work on the larger models has helped me learn more about sculpting. I've tried to increase the level of detail in each project. The King of the Dead conversions are the next step in a process of learning new skills. I plan to make the conversions more and more extreme - taking away more of the original model each time and then adding more in its place. It's a bit like learning to ride a bike with stabilizers. Eventually I'll take off the stabilizers and sculpt a mini from scratch. But I'm not ready for that yet.

Great article Nathan, I had no idea you were working away on this alongside your Dragon WIP. You have added an incredible amount of detail into such a small model, which is the sign of a great sculptor. Splendid work! I actually really like the chainmail - it has a better appearance than that of most of GW's chainmail minis. And to top it off, the painting is awesome.

I will definitely use your guide as inspiration for future conversions and perhaps 'borrow' your painting method
