Hello peoples of One-Ring,

I am painting an Angmar force, and the skin of some orcs will be black. Can you advice me on how to highlight black? I am planning to lightly drybrush greys over the protrusions. What else is effective in order to achieve a realistic result?

Thank you :pippin:

You could try highlighting with a light tan or khaki, instead of grey. It would "warm" the black up a little, rather than the "cooler" grey highlights. Also, I've used tan to highlight black before and it doesn't turn out as weird as it sounds.

Thank you, Erunion. I may try adding khaki highlights to one of them and see if I like it. (A lot of the orcs have cool khaki skin, to resemble bleached flesh and it looks appropriately ghastly.)

Thank you, Mapper: Your links will prove very helpful!

Here is the website I used to learn to paint different skin tones

http://www.jenova.dk/

Select the tips and tutorials section off to the right then select skin tones. There is also a link to painting drow skin which may be more in line with what you want for orcs.

Wow, Jidizzy, the site has a wealth of tutorials! I will peruse more than the "skin painting" one!

I love the website. I have tried to reach the author many times to thank her for the information she posted, but I think she ducked out of the hobby a while ago :(
