Is it just me or is GW trying to edge out SGB? Wotr seems to be taking over and in my opinion it defeats the prupose of the Lotr game. Other than the fact that its Lotr the thing that drew me to the sgb was that your models could move were they wanted (unlike the squad/regiment system) and that it was not made to be played on a large scale. Just curios to see how other people feel about this.

I like the skirmish side of sbg, and the wotr was a good idea to play larger games. But if GW planned to use wotr to replace sbg then they have another thing coming. They are probably relying on the high costs of collecting a wotr army to keep the lotr range alive.

WotR itself seems like part of the grand scheme to reform the line into a Warhammeresque system. The SBG was designed as a small skirmish game, where at most up to 200 models would be fielded. With the advent of the economic downturn, GW realised they won't reeling the profits on anywhere near the old scale, so they invented an entirely 'new' rules system, which was essentially a blend of Warhammer and LotR. The intent being, it would appear, to force hobbyists to purchase scores, if not hundreds, of new minis. This multiplies their revenue 3- or 4-fold, plus the 'revival' of gamers who had almost abandoned LotR. I wouldn't say that they're fazing out SBG, but it seems more and more unlikely that they'll release anything SBG-oriented. I think we've pretty much seen the last of the SBG supplements. From now on its going to be WotR all the way, and I have to say I don't like it.

EDIT: Yay, 700th post! And it just had to be a rant, didn't it.

I don't think GW will forget about SBG because they are so greedy when it comes to money and there are still a lot of SBG players, but i think they will probebly stop producing Supplements for it and focus more on WotR :(

The old SBG rules will still be around but, from the look of things, it is being pushed in the direction of a "specialist game". Almost all of the LotR events that my local GW hosts are WotR and that is the system they are pushing on any player interested in the LotR model range.

As for WotR itself... it is an 'ok' system but all of my concerns on poorly balanced companies/heroes and rule loop holes have been confirmed. Plus, I always hated with a passion (and still do) the large model count that is demanded by WotR. GW's habit of increasing the prices on their products despite the hard economic times does not help either.

I love the fact that in WOTR if I even want to field some of my units that I presently use in SBG, like Denethor for example, I need to do the following,

(CDN $)
Denethor: $16
Beregond: $16
Osgiliath Vets: $16 x 2

So a single company, not even a formation, is ~$64, then if I want a second company I have to purchase more vets in packs of 3 to go in trays of 8... All to play with the 0 courage Denethor... Until they start putting together sensible box sets of some of these units, I'm happily continuing to play SBG
