Smaug was never broke, he had reserves, and he melted some of it down and poured it on Haldir's ungrateful girlish head. For it had been Smaug who had secretly raised Haldir as his son, and sent him off again to the Elves as a mole.

Haldir uses his newfound wealth to create a trading monopoly with him at the head. Smaug gets upset that his "son" is far more well off than he is and spirals into depression.

Haldir realizes Smaug tried to smother him in molten gold, just like the dwarves did in the film. He laughs at this lack of imagination. Smaug flees in shame.

When Haldir emerges from Smaug he is quickly hailed as a hero for facing Smaug and living. Halidr enjoys the new fame, Smaug though is depressed that he is not famous for anything else then killing people.
