Hello!

I am currently collecting an Minas Tirith army. What should I buy, fountain guards of citadel guards?

Both!
But there's many ways to answer this question!

Both because why not!
Citadel for longbows, horse option and cheaper pts wise the FG.
Fountain guard for D7, shield option.

Also is your force minas tirith based, osgiliath, beginning of 3rd age or end of 3rd age, etc

What do you want them to do, what else is in the force, which hero's are you taking?

Hello MacCollac,

If you are referring to buying Fountain Court Guard vs Citadel Guard from a collectors standpoint, then we agree that both is right right answer since they are both fantastic minatures that look good in their respective dioramas of the White Tree or City Walls, and also look good in thier respective armies of either being with Beregond or Denethor.

However, if you are asking this from a tactical standpoint, then this will largely depend on your list. If you are looking for the all-comers infantry unit, typically Fountain Court Guard are the go to unit. They can get 7 defense which makes them highly resilient to even Heroes. However of course, Citadel Guard just simply lower that defense a bit to give you tactical options of a longbow and a cavalry option. So despite thier stat lines being very similar at first, it is really two completely different styles of unit option since Citadel Guard utilize a mobility and shooting role.

Thanks for the replies.

With regards to what units I have, is actually all the minas tirith heroes (except king of men) and all units (cav, inf and rangers).

I am not planning to use citadel guards mounted, simply because I am in no way able to convert them with horses as of now (time/skill/money).

Reason why I ask, is what unit would benefit me the most, in general?

If you are not including the horse mounted citadel option at current then I'd go fountain guard with shield,
The higher defence value wins it over citadel guard on foot doing the same roll especially since rangers can be a better ranged choice with there bows. :)

Guards have longbows (str 3) though, instead of rangers having just regular bows (str 2)?

Rangers hit more and vs any D6 force it makes no difference having S3 bows.
But there D5 vs return non S3 bow fire will help.

I prefer citadel guard. The fountain guard are cool, but as an elite support unit you can't bring their d7 to bear in addition to capitalize on their spear support. Citadel guard on the other hand can be out fitted with a spear and a bow making them very valuable for long and close range combat.

All the preferences people been pointing up its due to their playstyle, you should go with citadel or guard of the fountain according to your battle plan or themed or both.

Generally like the majority mentioned, fountain guard wins a round of the most picked unit cause of their unique quality of having a shield and turning into D7. That is quite unusuall for realms of men forces as these are the only ones who achieve higher than 6 in standart non dead infantry soldier. That by itself you can see great usage of them specially having mens with the resilience of dwarves.

That said fountain guard play a complete diferent role, where citadel guard can use diferent wargear to fight ina more mundane situation, fountain guard the best to hold shieldwalls and tight spots. The ideal amount for you to take? it depends pretty much on your army set up but if you take them, I wouldn´t recommend anyway less than 6 in your force.

Citadel guard on the other hand do offer you quite some interesting choices... for once its the only cav you might be able to send field wise regardless of direction and they wont break as long your heroe they protect is alive.... this can be at some measure quite interesting, as for citadel guard being an elite unit, it actually can field in scout role for your force... and what a scout... a very heavily armoured one.

There also extremely flexible to escort some of your key heroes mounted on the field and having that F4 spear support can play crucial role in case you have to support smaller base sized models to lend that precious superior fighting capabilities.

*you got a company out there with an equivalent models if you dont like to convert anyway*
