So, believe it or not I actually have been painting. I'm working on a forgeworld venerable dreadnought for a certain online competition called 'The Golden Bolter'. IMO its my best work yet, and I've been trying painted battle damage and weathering powders to add a realistic look.

Wowza! That's some awesome painting, Patrick! :-D

The damage marks are perfect, and the metal is fantastic! I look forward to seeing it finished! :-D

Cheers lads,

There is indeed more contrast FoF, alot more in fact. But from what I can see, minis that get 9s on CMoN generally have a lot of contrast. It is more aesthetically pleasing though.

That weathering and battle damage is bloody amazing.

Do you plan it out beforehand, or do you just apply it on the fly so to speak? It's a technique I'm really interested in as I want to start doing it with my own minis.

I just apply it on the fly. Random is best, since it would occur randomly IRL. I have made scratches in the upper parts of the shinguards to even it out a bit also.

It looks great, I love the reds. I know reds can be challenging to work with and the way you have done it is amazing. The contrast is great, very pleasing to look at.

I especially love the metal areas the rust looks fantastic.

I will be watching this thread very carefully for updates.

Keep up the good work.

P.S Want to share the colours you used? I wouldn't mind giving it a shot the way you did.

Thanks,

KJ

Thanks all for the kind words. The recipe is essentially the same as before except there are slight changes.

Base of Mechrite - Glaze badab black in the shadows and around the edges of the red - after the shadowed areas are fairly dark, begin highlighting by adding increasing amounts of Bubonic Brown and applying to the parts recieving light - when this is done, the battle damage is simply done by painting a thin line of Scorched Brown, followed by a thinner line of your brightest highlight colour (For me it was around 30/70 MR/BB) on the lower 'edge' of the brown.

The metal is the same as before with orange weathering powder added to the steel.

Torso looks great, especially the gold. I also like the top of the head/ helmet things, the white is great. Its not to clean looking which is perfect for this model. Liking the little scroll's too.

I can not wait to see this finished, its going to be really fantastic.
