Hey,

I was wondering what one should do if they have cavalry but don't have dismounted variants.

If the whole model was considered as one, but you could still shoot the horse instead, then dispatching cavalry would be a breeze.

If the whole model was considered as one, with you only being able to shoot the horseman/the horse has his defense too, than it could potentially make cavalry too strong.

What solution do you guys use?

Proxies my man, proxies. Find a model with roughly the same equipment and use them. It's harder for people playing armies like Dol Amroth where the foot dismount is now OOP. Just use it till you cen find/buy/trade/convert the other model you need

As you've pointed out, killing the horse out is very easy and more likely to happy (generally) than the rider dying. Having to kill the rider does make cav much tougher than it should be.

In most cases people either have conversions they've made for dismounted models or they place a dice on the model's base to indicate it is now on foot.
While the latter can put you at a slight disadvantage in certain situations, it at least means you can use any cavalry model without any problems if they get dismounted.
