Get numbers, get mounted RotN and get malbeth.
Halbarad with banner is cool but can be a massive points sink so often I wouldn't take the banner in favour of more men.

Then sit back and shoot in blocks. When the enemy close on one block heroic march away while the other blocks shoot... or engage if they are weak enough or if you can angle the enemy to expose their rear to your bows/mounted RotN

Nice! Any chance you could pop by the army board and comment on my 1000pt suggestion matey? The above is all very relevent and it sounds like your feedback would be very very handy!

The best way to learn how to play an army is to get out there and give it some playtesting against different opponents, armies etc. What works for one may not work for another.

I have never tested this myself, but I think mounted ROTN could make neat little assassins against minor heroes/banner barrer's. It's just a though, but perhaps quite deadly against shamans, you might not kill him though. What I imagine is 1 ROTN getting around behind the enemy formation then after they have moved, charge him in fight(hopefully killing, but probably knocking off a wound or two) then retreating(with might if nessesary) and finishing off/harnessing the enemy with his bow.

Wood Elves?

Because that's kind of a broad subject, how about the best way to use wood elf sentinels, as I haven't yet used them very well. And then we can talk about other smaller subjects?

Ok.
So, IMO, sentinels are good for their points in lots of different ways.

I normally take one in 500pts vs Uruks to mess up phalanxes to charge with glorfindel when I use him.

Their 2 attacks also means that they can fight most captains with odds to win (higher fv), but don't put them in an even fight too often as if they loos they are dead and 25pts are gone in a flash.
I often use a wood elf warrior to shield and sentinels to attack after they've finished disrupting.
They can slow the progress of formations by moving a unit from the front through everyone, causing them to move out of the way, so they need to get reorganised which takes the best part of a turn usually.
The terror song is very useful, especially in a narrow area like defending a gate in a siege, and elven cloaks are brilliant as they increase their survivability by about 200% in my experiences.
However, no wood elf spears is annoying, and so is the fact that neither they, not captains can get the noldorin exiles upgrade from Gildor, so, in an army of exiles, they're not really worth it as you really want them to be at the front and they'd be your slowest moving troops.

Would you recommend using them as part of my battle line, as skirmishing troops, or with my archers?
I fight primarily isengard btw

I always fielded 2 with my wood elves.
Basically stand behind your ranks. Elven cloak shielding htem from bows. Shooting occasionally at baddies and hten use your early spells to break up their battle line then later use to create heroic combat spring boards or remove spears.

The bow on the senti is not really that important but it is a clue. You don;'t want to be incombat 100% of hte time.

I always put them forward and on the flank, behind cover to shield them from scary cross bowmen, or, a rathe ringenious tactic of mine, keep their phalanxes or main infantry between the sentinel and your archers.

Sometimes 1 is enough, certainly at 500pts it is, and when uruks fail courage tests, their phalanx is messe dup and I walk in slaughtering everyone.

The only problem with Isengard is that they are the least flexible army in the game, fighting in tight phalanxes where the pikemen have a lower defence, and the have to keep in their phalanxes or be slaughtered.

A brief overview of Sentinels vs Isengard

That's good to know.

Are you wood elves?

EDIT: Keep getting this mixed up with the WOTR one

Primarily I play Galadhrim, but most of my armies end up as 50/50 galadhrim/wood elves. Sometimes with high elves or dwarfs mixed in too.

I forgot to say how the sentinels worked out for me so I figured I might as well say now, better late than never. Overall the were ok, but again I didn't get to use them to their full potential, however their spells did come in handy when our battle lines had gotten stuck in and mixed around. The best thing they did for me was moving my opponents crossbows/vrashku around so they couldn't shoot :-D

I played a few games with sentinels too, and found that I spent way too much of the early game only casting spells/shooting with them, but then late game once some of my models had died, I sent them into the fight and they cleared up, they are pretty gnarly fighters too :)

I was just wondering what you guys thought about good (as in good side) hoard armies? Are they viable? Are they competitive?
What is the best good hoard army?

It's on my mind because, my all infantry Rohan army is essentially a hoard (who am I kidding it is a hoard xD ).

The good armies that can hoard that I can think of are:
- Rohan infantry
- Laketown Guard
- Minas Tirith Warriors with the cheap heroes
- Dale (I remember a while back someone proposed this...)
- Maybe Numenor, as they are quite the same as Dale but with stonger heroes.
- Lots of wood elves and stormcallers?
- any others?
