I think you are doing a great job with all your projects...the sashes on the Axeman of Lossarnach are looking very good with nice shading and highlighting.
The Tree stumps and branches look fantastic and the combination of real wood and putty, well, you have pulled it off perfectly !!!

It's been a while... Last update 8th January :x

Hey everyone! I've been completely distracted from progressing with my To9G army for weeks now, focusing my time and attention whenever it has been willing, on a large scale project. It has been my ambition for a few years now to recreate this scene ever since I first saw it. I won't share too much incase it starts to turn sour however I have taken lots of WIP pics up to this point in case I ever get round to writing an article.

Actually I'll leave you guessing for a day or two :P

But here's the miniatures I've been building and painting

<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010527.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010527.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010528.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010528.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010530.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010530.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I've only completed the metallic sections on the scouts. The clothing has seen a wash however I'm going to add another and highlight them once or twice, then only the skin, teeth and base are left.

Also (how exciting! ) Armoured Wood Elves!

<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010520.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010520.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010521.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010521.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I noticed that only 11 of the 12 heads provided are armoured which is a little disappointing. But I'm happy with everything else on the sprue, the detail is some of the highest yet! And here they are built

<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010531.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010531.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010532.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010532.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010533.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010533.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

No prizes for guessing what the project is

I won't bother saying 'Helm's Deep' then....

EDIT - looking closely at the second picture, the bareheaded Scout, I think the skin actually looks great as it is. Much more like the film Uruks, rather than the sunburnt Red Uruks of Games Workshopdom, that some people foolishly copied...

Very cool Jack. I also noticed that about only 11 heads having helmets...ah well, a bit of variation hurts no one...

can't wait to see them painted.

Ooh, and the gryphone sepia wash onto the gold armour works LOVELY mate...

Looking forward to seeing the Galadhrim finished, they're such great models. It's nice to see them assembled but unpainted, gives a nice idea of the high amount of detail.

Am I missing something?

Because I don't see any gold armour. I don't see any mention of Gryphonne Sepia...

So do I! The skin looks awesome as it is, Jack! 8)

I'm looking forward to see the Galadhrim painted by someone else than the chaps on GW. :)

Well I usually go the Blood Red route  but being colourblind it doesn't look all that different. I don't know why but Red uruks have always made sense to me up until now. Looking closely at the bareheaded scout in the second picture it seems it has had a light drybrush of Bestial Brown and a wash of Scorched Brown. If you guys think it looks decent, it will definitely save time so I think I'll use this method for the rest of them. I may add a little red into the mix though... :P

I've been looking for a reason to use this wash and I guess it can't hurt trying it on armour, seeing as how my wash attempts always come out shiny. Speaking of which, John, how do you make your Devlan Mud washes come out with a matt finish? Is there a secret :-D

@John, You see those Galadhrim? hes going to paint the armour on them gold (normally). i just added that the gryphonne sepia wash over it will look amazing.

@Jack. There is no secret to the washes, they all dry with a matt finish unlike the older shiny inks... :-D

Gryphonne Sepia over gold does look very good, I'm currently using something similar for my golden Dwarf armor and it's turned out preatty well. I would highly recomend painting your Galadhrim's golden armor that way, Jack. 8)

I could hardly miss the three pictures now, could I?

You tense suggested that he had already stated he would either be painting them gold or using the GS wash.

What you should have said would have been along the lines of -

If you are painting them with gold armour then a GS wash WILL look lovely...

Those uruks are looking ace! I think the 12th unarmored head was there so that you could have a captain with no conversion, just a slightly different paint job. 8)

Great start on the Uruks!

Those Galadrim Elves look great even whne they're unpainted.

Maybe i should start an Elven Army

Yes, the tenses were a little messed up. hehe. Will keep that in mind next time...

Now for the Finale to the post (one of your favourites)

Thanks for that John! 8)

Yeh I'm getting used to that unarmoured head now, any of the elves would look great as captains, I can't find a pose that I don't like.

Couldn't take a good picture of the Uruks without it appearing too dark or the flash giving the appearance of shiny cloaks :-X so I will make an effort tomorrow morning before I go away to post some pictures.

In the meantime here are some Helms Deep WIP photos :-D

The layout, to scale
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010377.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010377.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The building of basic shapes
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010386.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010386.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The height difference is going to be one polystyrene sheet as in the image. The outer wall will be 3 sheets high, the inner 4.
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010387.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010387.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The base for the inner courtyard and walls
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010389.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010389.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I only have a limited supply of the blue stuff so I will be using the nasty white stuff where ever I can
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010391.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010391.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

As I haven't decided how I am going to complete the wall surface, I am taking care to use the same material through out incase I do decide to carve into the polystyrene. The arch and stairs are carved out to maintain that effect.
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010395.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010395.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The beginnings of the horse ramp into the inner courtyard
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010398.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010398.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The pieces positioned. Nothing stuck in place yet.
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010405.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010405.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Outer wall
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010408.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010408.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The underside of the inner wall now (now 3 sheets high)
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010409.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010409.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010410.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010410.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Horse ramp carved
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1010414.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1010414.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

What these images don't say, is the countless hours spent watching the Helms Deep scenes, the documentaries on the Extended Edition and looking at other peoples work all over the net. There is a wealth of material not only on the English LOTR sites but all (what looks like) German, Polish and probably many others I've yet to discover.

Here are a few interesting links

http://www.tabletop-hdr.de/gelaendebau/ ... nd-turgor/

http://www.haehnsen.net/html/helms_klamm.html

At the very least I can now translate Helms Klamm :)

Helms Klaam?

Sure I saw that in an adult movie shop once...

I'm impressed with your progress so far Jack, it even goes a little way to explaining your lack of focus on other projects...

Still, the carpet is horrendous.
