I enjoy your updates on Instagram, Gene and it is great to have you posting on OR. I like what you're doing with Aragorn. He looks nicely weathered and his face is pretty intense, much like Viggo's can be. Looking forward to seeing some dioramas from you!

Thanks Kuribo. Your stuff on IG is great too.

There is a subtle blue shade there already, but it seeped into the hair too deep. I pulled it back a little this morning so it's not as overwhelming. I'll revisit it as the model progresses

2003 vs 2020. Osl is a bit stronger in real life. Will have to sleep on this one, very hard to balance.

That's a gorgeous Frodo Gene. What a difference 17 years makes!

With a few long breaks along the way. Imagine what 17 years unbroken might have produced! Thanks for the compliments.

These progression pictures are always very interesting to see. Good job on (new) Frodo! I also find OSL very difficult to get right, in fact I have never really been satisfied with the results I have produced. Yours looks pretty nice though, and it's always good to experiment with these more unusual techniques.

Thank you. I've taken a clearer pic

My goodness, man! You're like Gandalf. Disappears for a while and comes back in blazing glory. I'm absolutely loving the OSL. Do you have a recommended guide to follow for us imitators?

Thank you. No guide for it really, though I am experimenting with 'underpainting'. See Dana Howl's tutorial on Youtube. For OSL I got some tips from the Massive Voodoo blog a few years ago, but still just messing about with it. I think it's too strong here as the source is far away from the reflection.

And being on government enforced lockdown helps too :)

Calling it done. toned down the osl on the clothes, but intensified it on the staff.

You're staying very productive and creating some nice looking minis! I think the OSL effects are looking great and your color choices for Gandalf are spot on!

If you're looking for a bit of feedback, I'd maybe paint some darker hair under Gandalf's chin to separate what is a fairly thick line of white beard in middle. Hopefully that makes sense! I'm not the best at weathering so I could be off here, but I think you might have over weathered the cloak just a bit. I'd probably lightly drybrush the cloak with the darker color and then even more lightly go for that lighter color so that the raised parts look more weathered and the recessed parts look a bit shaded. Hope that helps and keep the updates coming!

Thanks. The chin was hard to shade, as it's underpainted with white, so I just left it as is. I'd have to add quite a lot of layers and the balance could be thrown off. There's lots of weird browns and blues thrown in there. The original idea, when I sketched out the pre-shading, was that the light from the staff would illuminate that side of the face not obscured by the hat, but that didn't work so well as it doesn't line up right. As for the weathering and all that, I'll leave the final touches until the rest of the fellowship is done and I decide on a diorama base. Watching the Fellowship costume design dvd extra pushed me towards doing it this way. His cloak is quite dirty all over. We'll see how they all balance out once they're done. Thanks for the feedback.

@Kuribo, on your suggestion I messed around a bit more with the beard and toned down the dirt a tad. Also took some more representative photos. Time to put these down and move on I think

Really nice work Gene...your style really makes the models pop and 'come to life'. Nice use of light and shadows, and everything comes together so well.

Always happy to see your posts and to be regularly inspired by the pics

thanks for sharing !
