I took a short break from LOTR as a palette cleanser but I'm finally back and glad to be working on it again. I'm happy to say I'm finally getting the tree making process figured out and I have fully based my first three trees. It is really beautiful how the models' bases and the terrain truely seem to have been made for each other. It works really well. You should ditch the map and paint one of your own. ;)

What material are you using for the bases of the trees?

Thank you as well Alhvar. If only I had the time and money! It would take a lot of tufts and a lot of Vallejo basing paste to do a whole board that way.

For the bases, I use MDF terrain bases from Charlie Foxtrot Models. Navigating the online store is not the easiest but there are bunch of different pre-cut MDF bases which I used for these trees. After you put some basing paste and glue the slate rocks and trees on, it just a matter of painting everything up and gluing on the tufts! :)

As others have said, you have managed to tie all the terrain together very well. I like small tree stands of one to three trees, much more versatile for gaming.

It has been a bit since my last update so I've got more than usual to show off! I've been all over the place project wise so I hope you don't mind the variety in what I have completed.

As I start to paint up Scouring of the Shire minis, I started with Maggot and his dogs. These are pretty fun, simple sculpts that you can crank out surprisingly fast.

I also got back to painting Breaking of the Fellowship minis including Gandalf.

Still plugging away at Eriador terrain for An Unexpected Journey scenarios which includes some simple hills and this recently painted Hunter Orc.

Well, it has been a bit because I got surgery but other than a brief break from painting, I've still been productive. I recently got my sixth Hunter Orc on Fell Warg done which means I'm halfway to my goal of 12!

I've also been chipping away at my Breaking of the Fellowship set by adding Gimli and Frodo to the nearly done category. Only three left to go now!

It has been a while and I managed to finish up my Breaking of the Fellowship set. I'm very glad to both own these and to have them painted up. I hope to use them in scenarios one day in the future!

Dave and Slinky, thank you both for your kind words! I'm always late to respond to comments but I really do appreciate them.

I've been bouncing between all kinds of projects but thanks to Dave's awesome battle reports, I have been working on painting up some Ruffians for Scouring of the Shire. Here's a look at my first four with basing yet to come.

Wow! Great stuff. I really like the colors on the Ruffians' clothing, and Goblintown looks impressive.

Very good looking models. I especially like the color schemes for each model. Colorful in such realistic way.
Maybe you would try using some washes and/or glazes to enhance look of the faces. In my works i use 1:1 mix of glaze medium and red/blue/purple or even mix of them to cover depths of the faces and other parts of the skin.

Paull7 - I really appreciate the feedback! I started experimenting with shading the faces a bit more since I saw your comment so hopefully we'll see some improvement in that regard.

Wow, nice work and a healthy chunk of painting.

Coincidentally, I got a deal on another Goblintown box set on eBay and have been thinking about diving back into Goblintown after wrapping up Scouring of the Shire.

Along those lines, I reviewed the Escape from Goblintown segment of the Unexpected Journey movie. The cartoony, action-packed movie scene feels pretty different from the grinding action that we see in the game scenarios. I've been mulling over modifications to make the game a bit more like the movie (perhaps making it just a solitaire option) but I haven't come up with any ideas that I'm too happy with. If anyone else has ideas.....

Congratulations on getting a good deal. They are certainly available if you keep an eye on eBay which is good considering the cost of the terrain.

I have done the same as you, in terms of revisiting AUJ to watch the Goblin Town scenes and to try to discern what Goblin Town looked like. The truth is, the way it is in the movies won't work well in the game. It is all narrow walkways that Thorin's Company plows through in the movies and in the game, that is not going to happen and it is a grind as you say.

My plan is to closely mirror the setup that GW shows for both scenarios in the rulebook as they have a fair number of paths and options for the dwarves at many different spots in the map. I also hope to have second levels in places so the dwarves can execute some jumps, just like in the movie. The trick is giving the dwarves enough room to keep from getting too bogged down but not making it too wide open that they get swarmed or just slice through a ton of goblins with ease. It is likely to be a careful balancing act.

In terms of rules, the one rule that I have toyed around with changing is to drop the whole, a goblin can act as if it has a spear but cannot be allocated a wound in combat because it remains out of its opponent's reach. That rule doesn't make logical sense and it would just serve to further slow down the dwarves in Goblin Town scenarios in a way that isn't fun for the good side.

Those are a few of my thoughts on all this, not sure if they're helpful, but more than happy to share and hopefully inspire you to give the scenarios a shot!

I couldn't agree more about nixing the Goblin's Chittering Horde rule (effectively giving them a spear and its concomitant immunity from wounds). If you're able to reach in to the combat, you should run the risk of cutting your arm cut off!

Multiple levels is a good idea, too, just for the looks and laughs if nothing else. It's too bad so little is made of the possibility in the movie.
