I love the HWK-260 - I remember that from the original Dark Forces game way back in the 1990s - the very first Star Wars FPS. The 'Crow' I believe it was called.

I love it! I play a game once a week with a friend of mine. He's not into wargaming generally, so it's nice half-way point between a board game and a wargame.

It could do with a nice big book of missions though as it doesn't take long to play through the three in the starter set a few times.

A campaign book would be awesome - with a "build your own" scenario generator.

I remember playing the old X-Wing game on the PC years ago and it had some readily translatable missions in it: "defend the convoy", "disable the escaping shuttles", "clear the minefield" were some that I remember.

For anyone who might just possibly have no knowledge of the Star Wars universe, or the game, it was played recently on Will Wheaton's Tabletop series on Geek & Sundry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mxPFHBCfuU
And FFG have their own tutorials:

May the Dice be with you :D

And as if there are not enough great looking ships, here come the first of the bigger ones, with Porkin's X-Wing accompanying the transport:

I am becoming more and more impressed with these minis - for pre-painted, they look fantastic!

I've heard great things about this system. Pre-painted miniatures is a nice change up and I love how simple the rules are.

Can anyone shed some light on team play? I’d love to get into a system where I can play with a group of friends but I've read some mixed reviews when trying to incorporate team play.

Lastly, how long does the standard box set last before things get uninteresting? It’s a bummer that it only comes with three miniatures.

Team play works fine. As long as theres enough ships to go around the more the merrier, imo. It has a rule that states you can't show your team-mate(s) your manouver dial, so it can get pretty funny when things start going wrong.

The standard box will keep you going for about half a dozen ganes at least (there are three missions in the game) before you'll wish for more ships. If you and a mate buy a starter set each it'll keep you going longer. Part of the fun is picking the next thing you want to field though, and just buying one ship every now and then will keep things from getting stale.

Thanks for the timely response!

I’m definitely considering it.

Do you collect a particular force or do you collect both sides? I thought expansions came with a few miniatures but it seems they only come in blister packs. It leads to the problem of finding a friend to get involved or to fork over a good lump of cash so you have enough to play for two. :o

Plus, how popular is the game? Is it easy to find opponents?

Despite my love for SBG I'm certainly looking for a game that is a little more recognized. :)

I mainly collect imperials but then I have a friend who collects rebels. If I didn't I guess I would try and collect both equally. The games are best played at 100pts, which to give you an idea of scale could be between 3-5 small rebel ships, probably only 2 if you wanted the Falcon. Or 5-7 small imperial ships, again less if you wated a large ship in there.

I've found it to be a popular game and whats more, it's very easy to get people to try (even non 'gamers') and I've yet to find anyone who didn't love it.

Looks like Beasts of War are very much into X-Wing as well, and are using it as one of the core games in their proposed new club.
It is about the last 20-odd minutes of the show.

I love this game.

Pity I only seem to get a game once every 6 months, the local scene is dead for pretty much everything that isn't 40k/Warmahordes.

Well, I have ordered X-Wing for myself now. It will be a big change, having minis ready to roll straight out of the box.
Of course, being me, I couldn't possibly make do with just 3 ships.... :)
More on that later, when they arrive and I start playing. The great thing is, EVERYONE has seen Star Wars (the original 3 films) so the basic idea is very easy to get across, even to a non-gamer. So I may be playing at Christmas against anyone silly enough to visit Castle Dorthenstein.

A couple of other firefighters have been raving about this. Maybe it's time I gave it a go.

Played a small intro game last week, nicely quick and easy. Probably even more fun with some more ships, you can be more tactical dividing them in groups, taking advantage of the order of activations etc.
Not sure if I'll invest in it myself, although the fact that the ships are prepainted is quite an advantage, looking at the current backlog...

There are a lot of tactical discussions out there on the Interwebs:
For example: http://www.themetalbikini.com/p/tactical-tuesday.html
And: http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2013/04/ ... eview.html
There are plenty more - just search for X-Wing tactics or similar.
Now, where has Artoo gone with my chocolate biscuit?

I like X-Wing a lot. I very nearly splashed out on a couple of starter sets plus some expansions simply to provide a short-timescale game for between LOTR games, to fill in while waiting for players to arrive or to wind down after a game, or to take to the local club. It's playable on a small surface, it's absorbing and is handy to get started straight from the box, as has been noted. Individual miniatures aren't cheap by general wargames standards but are magnificent value compared to LOTR/TH: SBG!

Sadly I delayed, being unusually sensible about my spending, and then got sucked back into WW2 20mm, but I play X-Wing with mates whenever I can and recommend it highly.
