Yes, it's done in our free time. We're all gamers and painters like everyone else here and we run the place because we all feel strongly that the LOTR wargaming hobby needs something like the One Ring.

It's nice to hear that our efforts are appreciated and it helps make it worthwhile :)

The title of this thread intrigued me (nothing like a good bit of intrigue on a Friday night).
I thought initially that this was the answer to some quiz question ... showing my age again (I remember Young Master Gandalf - he was a scallywag in the early days, turning people into frogs, how we laughed...)
I sense that this is another manifestation of the so-called txt-speak, spreading like a dark shadow from Mordor, covering all the lands in abbreviated gibberish. Old recalcitrants like me prefer the richness that language can bring. '+1' is fine in a mathematical setting but can be a bit of a nuisance elsewhere, especially as, like many of these slang terms, it can have more than one meaning and therefore is interpreted subjectively by every individual based on their own knowledge. Little things like that can turn out to be insulting in some cultures (I am not giving any examples as some twit may think it amusing to try them out). If it's insults you want, I am available to insult you at very reasonable rates

And I also add my appreciation for all that Dagorlad, the rest of the admins and mods and you guys bring to this place - time and effort going in to make it run well so we can share our hopes, thoughts and creative efforts based on the wonderful world that The Professor created (Tolkien, not Moriarty... )

Roll on December 14th...

Just a friendly reminder guys and gals -

Answering a post with a mere "+1" seems to be on the decrease now which is great but it seems that answering posts with "i agree" or "agreed" and adding nothing more to the conversation is creeping back in.

Nobody wants to read a post then 15 people say " I agree" do they? (don't answer that!)

Cheers

The temptation to put those two words is so great that I think I just burst a blood vessel trying to resist it. I concur with your opinion oh great DMS.

Seriously though, glad this is a forum with lots of great viewpoints and interesting thoughts to read.

I do think we've seen an improvement in +1 or 'this' responses (though I think many of us are guilty from time to time).

One related item though might be quoting very large posts. There are times you will have a quote cover half the page to be followed by only a line or two of new response. Perhaps people could go in and just delete out the bulk of the quoted text? Even if they are agreeing or responding to the full quote it's ok to just have the start and finish of the original post quoted. Anyone can scroll up and look at the original (this can be even worse with responses that quote large photos btw).

Yep. If you're responding to a wip, it's normally assumed that you're responding to the latest update, so no need to quote anything. And if you're not, it should be fairly plain in the text.

Wow yes i see what you mean. Having no interest in Harry Potter or Harry Potter and Lotr comparison I had not even looked at the thread.

I have a little suggestion that is I think slightly relevant to this thread.

When people wish to quote a large block of text, particularly if they just want to say they agree with it, I think they should quote as normal, keeping the quotee's name and date, but replace the netire body of text including pics with the word "snip".

It i something I saw on another forum and I thought it might be helpful for you.

I'm not sure whether or not this has been suggested, but some forums I visit, like for LOTRO, has a system where you can add reputation to a post, and give a reason why etc. It also has a part where it prevents you from giving too much to the same person without spreading it around, I just thought that would be a good idea for liking someone's post.

The infinity forum has a similar system- you don't rank threads or posts, you rank the user (reputation). Quite good at keeping people in line as well I think, and a nice way to show appreciation when someone has done something cool, but you don't feel the need to add to the thread itself.

I could see a definite place for a "like" button. As a new player to LoTR I don't often have anything relevant to add, and I try hard not to reference other game systems.

But I do get a lot out of the site. Reading a rules a questions yesterday, a reply casually identified a warbands rule that I was misinterpreting. (In my head warbands were squads and would stay together, 40k style) Finding out they could move anywhere they wanted after deployment completely changes the strategy I was using for building my army.

Aside from thanking the computer screen and high 5'ing the lamp I had nothing to offer to the conversation so I didn't post. Rep system or like button would be a way to let that person know that there response really useful.

(Off topic note to the site developers: This has become my favorite hobby site, despite my new involvement in LoTR, because of the fast informative response time of the community, and general positive attitude. The creation of this community is something you should be proud of)
