It's come at a great time for me. I was planning to construct a Mines of Moria board for the last month and I had been flicking through the pages of the Khazad-Dum sourcebook looking for inspiration and had drawn up a board but didn't have any real idea about how to go about doing it. Thanks to your guide I finally know what I'll be requesting as christmas presents and what materials to use.

Overall, I am so grateful for your article and I am really happy I stumbled across it today.:)

Great bit of work and well within the reach of most members. This is really important to encourage people to 'have a go' if they haven't made much terrain before.

Fuss is quite rightly made of fantastic advanced terrain work but from a community perspective it's great to get a guide that does the simple things well.

Perhaps you could do an extension to this article to add more specialist bits and pieces such as a rope bridge, ladders, mining carts and equipment etc. to flesh out your existing article ?

I'm glad that my article will be of some use to you, Moria terrain is a lot of fun to build and I'm sure you'll enjoy it very much. Be sure to share your progress with us all here on OR! :)

Thank you very much for the kind words. An extension to this article certainly is a possibility, a few people suggested I build a bridge for the board, I just haven't had the time to get around to constructing it. My article on how to construct a dwarven mine working is in some ways a companion piece to this article, and a lot of the techniques shown in that article could be used to build some of the pieces you mentioned. If I can come up with enough small terrain pieces of a high enough quality, then I'll certainly consider an article on them. :)

When I saw the Styrofoam board I had my doubts about how it would look completed (probably because I personally hate using it) but your results are excellent and shown off in a well laid out article! Great looking board!! :yay:

I agree with Azog - yes, miracles never cease.. :o

However, I would prefer to use pink foam or similar finer grained, high density foam, rather than the cheaper but relatively flimsy styrofoam.

After all, it has to take the weight of a balrog, at some point!

The other thing I would do different is go modular (though that can be done with your board to some extent as there is no problem adding standalone columns and pillars.

I agree with you that a form of high density foam would have been preferable, but as I stated in the article it was sadly unavailable to me.I checked quite a few hardware stores to see if they had any high density foam available, but was sadly unsucessful. I'm going to have to look into whether or not there are bans against the use of blue and pink insulation foam here in Nevada, similar to those found in California. I seem to be having an especially hard time of finding any variety of high density foam. :(

The board depicted in the article is part of a larger 4ft x 4ft Mithrill Mines board, divided into 4 2ft x 2ft sections. Any mine workings or other such details will be moudlar. :)

Great article. I was trying something similar but I always had a problem with the foam. The spackle is a great idea and I need to get a hold of some my self. It is a shame that TLA is down because there was a very interesting thread there which you may be interested in seeing. Someone was making a multi layered moria board. It was done by simply adding stairs to and around the various boards and getting a few details to correlate. It might be something worth considering in the future.

Ah missed this article. 2 now on Moria workings. Nice work Josh. keep it up.

THeres definately a sense of professionalism on perfecting articles which was missing from the 1st.

But I think this was very nice, and you will get quickly known for your library of Moria articles. So do more is what i shall say =)

I don't have any more Moria articles planned at the moment, but there is a possibility of another one whenever I begin to collect Goblins and Dwarves again. I'm currently collecting Rohan and Isengard, and I may work on a few Rohan articles. Everything is merely in the planning stages at the moment though. :)
