Do you think that using a round standard base that wasn't set into a bigger base made a difference ?

You nailed it right there - thats the big one

Sickening about the base, but I suppose it's always good to learn.
Ive been looking closely at yours and doing some comparison to the third place and I will be ultra critical if you don't mind.
Yours could do with more contrast between light and dark. Though yours is in the open and the third place depicts an underground feel, I think this is an area for you to look at.
Look at the left knee of the third place and compare to yours. It is smoother and no series of lines to create the highlights. In general it is blended a lot smoother.
The icicles are too big as icicles on trees tend to be fairly small. I'm sure there are exceptions but it was one of the first things that I saw.
I'm being harsh but from what I can see, these are the main differences that I hope you will convert into a winning piece next time around.

From what i have heard of Golden Demon Judges is that they go in "fashions", so i guess the current "fashion" is a slotted in base, a previous winner once commented it was a case of predicting the next fashion of what the judges will look for.
Great work though Kev, if it was judged on painting skills and passion for the LOTR hobby you would have won easy mate.

Was the show any good? I guess no pre-releases on show?

Aawww... Sebastian's so cute :flower:
Both those figures are mightily impressive but I am especially impressed with Glorfindel :)
I love the base, how did you do the waterfall, it AMAZING :D

Thanks bud - the waterfall is a long slow process. I started with woodland scenics realistic water to build the water level up to the desired height. Once this was done I took some Woodland scenics Realistic water and dropped a small drop onto a teflon coated pallette ( and no Dorthonion it wasn't Mrs DMS' frying pan lol) then spread the drop with the wrong end of a brush or toothpick to make it into thin lines. once dry peal off the pallette and trim to fit and attatch to base with more water effects.

Your painting is absolutely stunning but I am going to be brutally honest and say that the way you paint the 25mm round base that light brown really detracts from the awesome scenic basing and the miniature itself. I strongly believe it would look WAY better if painted it with one of the more neutral earthy colours used on the scenery or perhaps even black. Even a darker version of the current colour would be better.

Thanks samoht - I'll put that to the test the next model I paint for my own collection. Thanks buddy.

I have been blown away with the standard of painting and modelling here. I much prefer simple bases apart from on monsters or slightly built up bases on hero models of an underwhelming nature.

However I use all my models for gaming, whereas if I was after models for display purposes I would really go to town on the bases!

I suppose the present thinking at Golden Demon is to show the highest level of what is possible in painting a citadel miniature, and gilding the lily is encouraged.

I'm not much of a gamer (in fact I can count on one hand the number of games i've ever played) mostly due to lack of opponents. As my models are intended solely for display i enjoy basing them in a rather Over the top way.

I personally like the brown base rims. Its how GW have displayed their own range since the dawn of the game and how all mine are coloured. I do see what Samoht is saying though, in that your bases are so lavishly done, the contrasting rim draw the eye away from the masterpiece itself. Try regular black to see how that looks. It doesn't get any more neutral than that.

Awesome painting. Why did you get rid of your old WIP? How am I supposed to catch up on all the models I've missed?

My old thread was 80 odd pages long. Getting impossible to find anything and taking up a lot of One Ring space. All my work is still readily available in The Dead Marshes

Thanks for the comments guys :)

Wow. That glorfindel is stunning. To me his base is so much better than the gandalf that you entered in the GD, as this one doesn't distract from the figure, but is still crazy good and adds to the figure. And the actual figure....Wow. I love the freehand and weathering on the cloak especially, superb job on that!
