Mounted Grima and Saruman are really ace! I love the pose of the hors of Saruman! Is it Bullroar Took's horse you used? Fantastic Dave!

Those trolls all together look ace! I never put them all together myself, but I think I have just the same ones as you have, only 1 more plastic troll to get both spear and hammer - pose (although they both look terrible)

First, that's an amazing Saruman mounted! 8) I use his White Council pose as my favorite on-foot version but plan on getting the Orthanc set and wondered about that version as a mounted conversion but you blew away anything I had envisioned. What horse did you use as the base?

Regarding the Trolls, I'm really impressed how many different poses you were able to get out of the basic kit. All the GW pics just pose the plastics in pretty much the same look as their metals...not sure why they would do that when variety on the battle field is so much more interresting. I really love your examples. :-D We won't mention anything about the replication though... :P (five from one kit! 8) Rock on!! )

Well I've been staring at those trolls for way too long now. They need painting now so I've lost my motivation. I decided to turn my attention to one of my first armies - the high elves. I noticed I had nine swordsmen that were missing their elven blades. I also noticed that I have an abundance of elven shields and minas tirith lances at my disposal. With only 13 metal spearmen in my force, I decided to convert the nine broken swordsmen into spearmen. This was very easily done just by slicing the shoulder joints and rotating the arms down. Add the spear and shield and voila! Plastic (mainly) spearmen.

They will require a bit of putty at the shoulders and hands on some of them but nothing major. I will probably make the blades more elf like aswell.

Here are four in wip to show how easy it was.

That's some nice work. I now feel I should get my own plastic elven phalanx back on track.

Great conversions (though I was a bit miffed as I assumed your had used the Power of Greyskull to lay your paws on new High Elf plastics...)
Paint them, paint them!

Well it's been 10 months since my last update, and I haven't exactly been very active here at OR as I have been doing a bit of family research, some of which can be seen here:

http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/walter-francis-fredericks-a-biography.html

Besides that, I have started many hobby projects, but as usual not finished any of them as you will see. I have real issues commiting to seeing a project out. This post was going to be massive, so I'll split it into several posts, but I'm hoping that you helpful ringers can help me choose which project to get on with.

1) Fell beast base and reins
2) Beast & Beings converted dragon paint
3) Mumak head/trunk reposition paint
4) Queer lodgings - House of Beorn
5) Kings of Old - Minas Tirith Statues
6) High Elven army painting
7) Numenor army painting
8 ) Isengard army painting
9) Other WIPs

Project 1 - Fellbeasts

Well I have remarkably managed to paint most of these. All that needs doing is to sculpt some reins on and paint the WK dead base.

Project 2 - Dragon

This started out as a £1.99 dragon from the Beasts & Beings magazine. I have put it on a proper dragon sized base, repositioned the wings, removed the egg, and given it a bit more detail on the head, claws on the wings etc. I also gave the belly a skin of putty and pressed small gravel into it to simulate the encrusted jewels.

Project 3 - Mumak

After assembling the mumak, I discovered that the head position prevented models from coming into base contact at the front. Not happy with that I decided to lift the head and trunk to avoid this issue. It meant sculpting a new neck and trunk but heh, no problem.

So that's 3 projects unfinished. Stand by for more. . . .

They all look good. I would finish up the fell beasts first because there is so little left and it won't take much time, it think. I also like the dragon, great work on it, and would love see it all done.

Project 4 - Beorns House

I started this a while back and found it again the other day. It was to be the house of Beorn, with stone foundations and chimneys, log walls and thatched roof. Here is as far as I got:

Image
The foundations started out as styrene sheet.

Image
From there I selected where i wanted my doors.

Image
Then I etched in the stonework.
Image

Image
I drew out the chimneys . . .

Image
Before etching them too.

Image
A balsa floor was added . . .

Image
. . .and then floorboards were etched in.

Image
Now the labour part. building the logs walls up. I chose to do this properly with floral sticks and then planned to plug the gaps with putty.

Image
It is very time consuming though, so that is how the project remains.

Project 5 - Statues of Minas Tirith

Some of you may recall that I volunteered to scuplt these four statues for PaulF's amazing Minas Tirith board some time ago. I kept putting this aside though as other issues took priority. I started out with movie stills, and from there worked out a scale. The statues are 100mm tall.

As you can see the 1st one is starting to resemble a figure. The putty was very roughly added. I will put a final skin over the top later.

Project 6 - High Elves

Well earlier in this thread I did some spearmen conversions. They are still awaiting painting. I have also added some minis from other ranges which I have tweaked here and there to better fit the armor of the high elves.

Image
Mounted Heroes. The Glorfindel Lord of the West was originally one of the twins. I've added a helmet and lowered the weapon arm.

Image
My stormcaller. Originally a Mordheim Elf mage. Looking at this I need to remove that mould line on the arm!

Image
A couple of elven heroes from Miniatures Del Castillo that I have tweaked.

Image
Image
Image
This also started out as a Miniatures Del Castillo Elf, but I have added a helmet and shield more suitable for LotR.

So there you go. A decent sized Elven force if I could be encouraged to paint it.

Project 7 - Numenor

This was my first ever army. Since then I've acquired another company of archers, and another 3 spearmen. I also have to paint up the mounted Isildur and do the conversion for the mounted Elendil which I haven't even started yet. To be honest, I think that's what has been putting me off finishing this army (The time for the conversion).

Project 8 - Isengard

When WotR came out, I wanted a nice big army to use, so I began rapidly batch painting my Uruk-hai minis. Most of them are now indeed painted, even if it is only a single block of colour on flesh, cloth etc. I have about 20 minis left to bring up to that level, then the whole lot (barring a few heroes) need at least a wash and highlight. Then there are details like White hands, teeth etc that would raise the entire look of the force.

I have about 40 warg riders, and 120 orcs that I could add to this force, but I'm treating those as a seperate project.

Project 9 - Other WIP's

On top of all this, I have 4 barrow downs built, but I need to add in the slate walls and paint/flock them.
My old Moria army was done but I've acquired about another 30 minis since then which need adding a paintjob to.
I also have several other large armies assembled - Rohan, Gondor, Dwarves, Harad, Eastern Kingdoms, Mordor - but they are all with the exception of Rohan unpainted.
I also have my own Ents which I want to convert to angrier poses, and I really need to start work on the Fir Ent which won't be until the new year now.

So what should I do? Please advise. I need motivation to complete something of my own whilst I continue with the MT statues.

Dave the Mumak is amazing...totally stunning!! :yay:
Beorn's house, the Minas Tirith statues, again mind blowing! The painting is excellent, the elves and the dragon are going to be something else when finished...well done my friend, well done!! :yay:

How does the Mordheim Elf mage stack up to the LotR metal elves for size?

I should start with the w.i.p that need the most time to finish then you only have to finish some smal stuf but if you start with the small stuf you stil need to finish very much.

I should start with the elf army.

Good luck

WOW!

Beorns House looks very interesting, I'd love to see more of this! :yay:
And I can't wait to see how you paint the dragon. 8)

The Statue of Minas Tirith look really good so far but if I were you I'd get the Fellbeasts finished before completing your Numenor army and then everything else...

AMAZING work so far, great sized armies you've got, keep us posted!

By the way what foam did you use for Beorns House?

 :? :o I don't know which one to say you should do, I can understand the lack of motivation though with all the projects lined up.
My vote will have to go to the: Dragon
