WIP of the goblins I've started for this months 'warband' contest:

Just the base skin colour so far (and one on the left hand side with a wash of crimson for the next stage). Have reasonable hopes for trying to give a nicer skin tone and better shaded browns on the leather, etc, than on my previous goblins.

Great painting - though I believe your goblins are slightly better than the dwarves (they are all very good - just the gobbos have something better about them).
I like the lightbox - your photos are excellent!

Just to show that I am getting some work done on these goblins. Base layers and shading pretty much done, now to finish off the skin, then some highlights on the hair and cloth, do the metals and all the extra little details... but I expect to be ready by the end of the month, no problem :D

So goblins have ended up coming out like this:

I've tried to go for sort of a more dirty look on these guys than my previous goblin attempts, and have made the skin less white at its lightest... see how it compares to my earlier attempts:

I'm not sure whether to leave them as they are, or bring them more in line with the old ones. If not, I may try and give the older ones a light wash of crimson to bring them closer to these ones.

More dwarves next I think!

The last Goblin on the bottom right photo looks the best to me, really good painting

I think they look better darker.

I prefer them darker too. I think the light ones are just too light.

Pale skinned but with foul pustules and a thorough layer of dirt - Misty Mountain goblin chic :)

A good month and a half since an update, but heres where I've gotten with the Goblin King (i.e. not actually very far).

Image

I want the finished product to be pale like the goblins, but a bit more fleshy coloured (hence the current state), and also looking a bit on the yellowy-jaundicey side in places... we'll see how it ends up I guess.

Very nice! I prefer your old ones with the darker skin - the other ones are a bit bright.
Only thing to suggest would be a very light wash in some places to bring out features (under eyes and maybe right side of mouth). I wouldn't wash too much though - i think you have the right contrast at the moment.

After a very, very long time away from this, I opened up the box again to have another bash at it! What easier way to get back into things than by starting to paint up the scenery included in the box...

Image

It's captivated me again, and hopefully I can spur on and finally make some progress with the goblin town set that's been sitting ignored on the shelf for the past two years. I think I struggled to get to grips with painting the goblin king, and my overall interest waned from there... time to re-invigorate that interest!

Lovely stuff! What paints/washes did you use on the planks?

Was super-easy actually, nothing particularly special - surprised it came out so well!

Primed it black, then did a sort of semi-dry-brush with Mournfang Brown (wiped most of the paint off, but left it wetter than a real "dry-brush") to leave a little of the black in the deepest recesses. Then washed it with Agrax Earthshade, then did another semi-dry-brush thing to catch the most raised areas with a 2:1 mix of Mournfang Brown and Balor Brown.

The wood trim on the door part is Rhinox Hide. Also whacked a littleCarroburg Crimson onto the bone parts to indicate that maybe they had some flesh on them not too long ago ;)

Post subject:  Re: Crixalis' WIP thread - Gandalf 25/05/2016

I planned to do Gandalf for the February "Movie Night" challenge. It's now May...

But finally I got around to doing it!

Image

Obviously not based yet, and picture taken under natural light through a window on to the right, so its throwing some shadows that aren't there on the model. Gives a decent idea of it though!

I had to re-paint the cloak a bit as the first time it ended up looking like a dirty towel, I'm reasonably happy with the grey now though. Didn't bother with the eyes as they're a bit small, so the face is just shaded a bit instead.

Now to paint something else quickly and get properly back onto the wagon!

Plugging your way through the goblin town set, not an easy task. Everything looks good. If you are still having trouble with metalics, treat them like any other paint. Thin them down, shade them and highlight them like any other color. Hope that helps.

Post subject:  Re: Crixalis' WIP thread - Bilbo WiP 11/06/2016

I feel like when I thin the metals, they give me a really weirdly bad coverage, and then when I do multiple layers it looks horrible and thick again. Can't seem to get the hang of it!

Some WIP shots of Bilbo at the moment..

Obviously a bit of a face problem and some other parts that need a tidy up. Tempted to go back and try to do Sting blue (as orcs are always nearby!) to avoid my metal troubles rather than confront them :o

With your metals only thin your highlights and not your basecoat.

Thanks DMS, will certainly take that into account next time I do metals. For this one, I decided to cheat in the end and tried to go for sting glowing blue to warn of goblins around :D

It's certainly not as "glowy" as I'd have aimed for at the start, but I think I'm reasonably happy for my first ever attempt at that sort of thing.
