DaveT, think I will keep it the way it is.

Wasn't happy with the roads in the plan I posted under my wip, redid them.

Image

Looking at my board as pink insulation wasn't getting me anywhere. Had space on the workbench for once so brought the pieces in and gave the board a quick base paint. (the lighting makes it look still pink, it actually is a light tan now) Roughed in where the roads will be. put Durin's statue on the lake, put a way stone in the intersection of the roads and a statue up on the elevated part.

Image

Gave me a better idea of what it looked like. Working on the steps right now, thinking I might do a low hill in the lower right corner

Finished the wall and walkway into Moria. Green mat will be replaced when ready to do all the ground.

What can I say, I like statues. (they can be removed)

Post subject:  Re: cobblestones

One of my Christmas gifts was Hirst Arts mold 211 - large cobblestone. I wanted this mold for the road to the East Gate of Moria, going with the large cobblestones vs the smaller ones in mold 210 as I felt the dwarves wouldn't bother with smaller stones.

Just started casting molds to see how it works and how many I need to cast. Picture darkened to show the mold better. I will sink the road 1/4 inch into the board to have it flush with the surface.

Balin's expedition entering the gate (had put on instagram but like the picture and wanted to put it here also as part of the build)

Post subject:  Re: Cobblestones built

Managed to cast and glue my cobblestone road.

Image

I added a small bridge, I plan to have a dry creek bed in the upper left corner of the board running from the mountain side to the lake, need to break some of the wall.

With the waystone, alignment of Durin's Stone, Waystone in crossroads and the Statue.

Image

Had to build another statue for the crossroads for a more generic dwarf kingdom

Image

Image

Lower right needed something, thought about building a small hill but remembered I had built an old fort/outpost

Image

Image

Or I might put a small grove of trees there. Will break up the flatness of the corners but not enough to hinder placing of figures/trees/etc.

Next step for the road is painting.

I haven't stopped over here in too long and all I can say is "Wow!" This project is looking ambitious and sensational. I know you've got more progress to make but its already shaping up really nicely. I can't wait to see the finished project but take your time and get all of those details right in the meantime!

Good weekend for terrain work. Got the cobblestones painted and did my Chamber of Mazarbul terrain done. Waiting for the dwarven runes before I post that.

The cobblestone roads

and of course, a picture with figures.

Thrain leading the Grim Hammers to war.

Next step will be sinking the roads into the insulation board.

Nice work as usual. The mixed colors on the cobblestones look really good.

If you mentioned it I missed it: where did the vertical edge plates (with the axe and the ?shield) come from? They're very effective, especially partially sunk as you did.

Post subject:  Re: Cobblestones painted

The vertical plates are a moria mold piece that I combined into the one shown. The axe and dwarf head are warhammer dwarf pieces I made a mold of.

I wish that the person I bought the moria mold from was still selling it, my mold is starting to split. I bought some silicone glue so hopefully I can get some more uses out of it.

The cobblestone roads will still get some vegetation scatter after I sink them and do the whole board. I wasn't sure if I overdid the different colors so thanks for liking it.

Amazing work… your ideas and execution of those ideas are really impressive

Are you going to surround the roads with more scenery ? Trees or rocks or just leave it wide open ?

Can’t wait to see the finished piece

Thanks for sharing

JA33 - my plan is to leave the surrounding areas flattish and add trees/etc on stands as needed/wanted.

Post subject:  Re: board progress

Took the opportunity to use the workbench between home projects and visitors to sink the roads and cut the creek bed from the mountain.

For fun through my fences on there

And some trees.

Next opportunity will start to throw on grass. Need to buy a big container of glue and figure out which colors I want to use. Still need to keep everything relatively flat to allow placement of trees etc depending on how I feel.

Post subject:  Moria East Gate

For those who have been patient enough to follow along on this thread, thank you.

In a corner of my "man cabin" is a 2ft by 3ft WWII map table. This is the base of my terrain piece of the East Gate of Moria. (for those wondering, the dinosaurs are the ones Wash plays with in Firefly, my niece gave them to me as a thank you for introducing her to the series. The Pepsi bottles are ones I collected in my travels, with Pepsi written in Arabic, Amharic and Korean.)

Image

Image

The board is built in pieces to allow me to get it out the door.

Image

I kept the areas flat allowing me to place scatter terrain and to keep the playing pieces from falling over.

What I have to go on the board according to my whim: statues, a hill, wells and a box of trees.

Don't worry, will have pictures with hordes of orcs/goblins/dwarves.

It is a great gameboard and has been fun watching it come together over the months. Having plenty of loose scatter to swap it around is vital with any sculpted terrain to stop it becoming stale.
