Can anyone recommend any books or guides for terrain making? I have seen the links in the forum but am after something physical if possible. I know there is GW's how to make war-games terrain but are their others anyone would recommend? Even train modelling terrain guides etc… Cheers, Aaron |

http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics. ... item/C1207 Woodland scenic also has tons of videos on their site. I have not read this book, but based on the tutorials I have watched from them, they know a lot about scenery/terrain. |

Sithious is right. Sometimes the best things in life are free. The Woodland Scenics book is just a hard copy of the videos, I honestly wouldn't recommend it. You can get the "Learn to..." kits or the Scene-a-ramic kits, they are sample sized and a weekend afternoon worth of fun. Most of the stuff in the model books is also available for free on line, like making bottle brush trees, etc. But if you absolutely must sink $ into books, go with Kalambach publishing's selection. A personal favorite: "The New Scenery Tips and Techniques." I quoted their snowy river somewhere on the boards. |

How to build Realistic Model Railroad scenery 3rd edition by Dave Frary I have all three versions. You can find used copies online. I like the older pre computer versions. The index cards are cool. However, some of the information is dated. Using dye and saw dust is an example.Modern saw dust has so much synthetic material in it it is hard to dye. The salt does not do the track any good. Using static grass is covered in the newest additions.Current methods for making flock and treating reindeer moss are also included. The books are well illustrated. |

If you can afford just one book, this is it. If you are in the UK, then look for books by Paul Darnell. Spectacular terrain for various periods in History. It is clearly for beginners.It will make a fine start.I have been making scenery for railroads, dollhouses and museum displays and Wargame tables for 50 years. I learned a lot from Dave Frary. I also have learned from paper artist like DM Scotty on Youtube. I follow the craft sites too. I learned a greater appreciation for Modge Podge there.You are only limiting your self by dismissing Railroad Scenery Books. |

Willow is correct about model RR books. Do not overlook them, as they are full of information on terrain making. However, most train books do not cover making buildings, other than assembling and painting plastic model kits. If you need to make castles, barns, buildings, battlefield ruins, statues and all sorts of battlefield debris you need the Wargames books. Get both. |
