Thanks everybody. The hardest part is knowing where to put the highlights. A good brush, glaze medium and a photographer girlfriend do the rest. |

You have green going onto the shaft of the weapon. I presume it is deliberate but where does is come from i.e. the light source? |

@Sid. All 1 brush. A Winsor and Newton series 7 size 1. @ Gandalf. The skaven have glowing green artifacts called warpstone and the necklace he is wearing is supposed to be warpstone and is the light source. |

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I've no idea about these figures but that only adds to how fantastic this thing is. I think what you have done could never be taught in a tutorial. You would need to be sat beside me for me to come anywhere near that. |

Thanks everybody. @Harfoot.The gold effect was done by using a base of snakebite leather and building up the highlights by blending in pure white. The recesses were then glazed with scorched brown to increase contrast. Glaze medium helped with the blending. Here's a rat ogre too. The last part of the commission.

The thing for me is the utterly pure colours and smooth blending which are a joy to behold. I can stop looking ! You mention using a medium for the blending but do you use it for all the painting ? If you do then I presume the medium helps prevent the grainy look when watering paints down and the pigments being prevented from dispersing. Whatever your answer I'm off to get some today. One more question if you could be so kind. I use enough paint on the brush so it virtually dries as I finish the stroke. Do you keep that same principle when using a glaze ? |

Hi Gandalf. On this miniature glaze medium was used on all parts to make the various layers more transparent and easier to blend into the darker layers underneath. The medium does prevent the granules of pigment dispersing in the water and keeps the coverage even. I use about 4/2/1 water, paint, medium as a rough guess for my paint mixes. Mess about with ratios as I could be wrong but if you use too much medium it becomes sticky and if you add too much water it will separate so just play it by ear. Practice with it first but once you get the hang of it you will be hooked. When glazing with glaze medium I load up the brush, wipe most of it off on some kitchen roll the use teh flat of the brush to push the pigment toward the area I want to be most dark For blending with glaze medium I get a tiny dot on the brush tip, wipe it once and then using the very tip of the brush I feather the colour around until it blends into the layer beneath. Once again practice makes perfect. Cheers. |

Thanks Hannanibal, a great help. I'm presuming you use Vallego Glaze Medium as I've noticed this has a handy drop dispenser. My local place doesn't do it so I will be ordering some. Thanks again and I will post updates on my WIP Cave Drake |

Wow. You don't see NMM on skaven models very often, I've noticed - it can easily look too "clean". You've pulled it off perfectly, though. Really, really nice OSL on the warpstone, too. You must have the patience of a saint. |
